Your Burning Questions
THE WORKOUT
What is Barry’s?
The Best Workout in the World™®. Founded in West Hollywood in 1998, it’s the original strength and cardio interval fitness experience that provides a dynamic, high-intensity workout that’s as effective as it is fun. Our fitness classes alternate between working out with weights and running on a treadmill and each day focuses on different muscle groups in order to achieve real results and to help reduce the risk of injuries.
Will I be okay if I’m a beginner or not already in shape?
Don’t worry! We welcome beginners and meet a lot of them everyday! If it’s your first time, we’ll look after you in any class you choose. We don’t have a “beginner’s class.” Barry’s classes are created for you to challenge yourself — you can set your own level of speed and choose the heaviness of your weight, depending on your experience.
To make the most of your first class, we ask that you arrive 15 minutes early. Find out more about being a first timer here.
Do I have to be a good runner?
The great thing about running as a cardio exercise is that you don’t have to be “good” to start. In your first few classes, choose a pace that feels safe but challenging for you. While our instructors will be pushing you, you’ll be the one pushing the buttons on the treadmill panel. If you really don’t want to run at all, you have the option to book a Double Floor class.
How often should I go?
We recommend 4 classes per week as an optimal number, with 3 classes per week at a minimum if you’re hoping to see visible results. But, as always, listen to your body — if your muscles are very sore, give them time to recover.
How many calories can I actually burn?
First, as with most things in life, individual results may vary. Depending on your body weight and effort in the Red Room, it is possible for clients to burn from 700 to 1,000 calories per class. But it doesn’t end there. Vigorous participation can also help raise your resting metabolism rate so you can burn more calories even after you leave the Red Room. This is what we call the “after burn.” Burn, baby, burn.
Why do days of the week focus on different muscle groups?
Most days, the floor exercises are focused on a specific part of the body. There are two reasons for this:
- It’s the safest option for people who really want to get fit fast — switching muscle groups creates the biggest impact and reduces the risk of injury.
- We come in all different shapes and sizes, and all of us have something about our appearance we’d like to prioritize.
BUYING A MEMBERSHIP AND CLASS PACKAGES
What options do I have for buying classes?
You have two options — class packages or 30-day memberships, depending on the kind of relationship you’re ready to have with us. As you’d expect, the more you commit, the more you save.
What is your refund policy?
As applicable, classes and membership packages are non-refundable. No exceptions.
We do not offer refunds on purchases for our services, beyond your statutory rights. We strongly plea with you to be modest in your initial membership purchases, and to make sure you like us, can reach the venue, and like what we do before making extravagant purchases.
Unused merchandise will be accepted for a full refund within 7 days of purchase. After 7 days, a store credit will be issued for up to 30 days. No returns will be provided without a receipt.
For Individuals Located in the European Union: You can cancel your order for a class or membership package without giving any reason within 14 days from the day of the conclusion of the purchase to the extent you have not used the package purchased. You must inform us of your decision to cancel your order. You may submit your request by contacting us at [email protected]. To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication before the 14 days’ cancellation period has expired.

Do you offer corporate discount or group booking programs?
We do! Find more info here.
What if I know my company already has a corporate partnership with Barry’s?
Lucky you! For your initial purchase of these special rates, you’ll need to contact our Corporate Accounts team at [email protected] to verify your employment. The corporate rates are not available for purchase through the website, so reach out to your local studio for assistance with buying your package or membership.
Can I transfer or share my class package or membership?
Class packages can be shared amongst clients, as long as they’re used within the same market in which they were purchased. Memberships, however, are non-transferable.
Can I use my classes at any location?
Our class packages and memberships are region-specific. That means that if you buy a class package or membership at Chelsea in NYC, you can only take classes at New York studios like Chelsea, Tribeca, or Noho. Ditto in Chicago, London, or anywhere else. Make sure to read the small print or ask the studio when buying a package or membership for clarification.
Can I freeze my membership?
If you commit to a membership, you can cancel it with a doctor’s order or due to a move out of the region. Hopefully you are moving to a region with a Red Room though! In either case, documentation may be required. You can also freeze it for up to six months for an injury. If you wish, you can freeze a membership for the duration of your pregnancy. We support you and when you are ready to come back to class postpartum, you can take it at your own pace. You know your body best and we are so impressed with our Mamas-to-be and new mamas in class.
Do my classes roll over if I don’t use them at the end of my membership cycle?
No. Any unused classes will not roll over to the next membership cycle. So, make sure to use up all your classes!

BOOKING YOUR SPOT
Do I book a floor spot and a tread spot?
You only need to book your starting spot, either tread or floor. This automatically reserves you the corresponding spot on the tread or floor, and that’s where you’ll move when the rounds switch. If you book Double Floor, you’ll skip the treadmill altogether.
Should I start on a treadmill or on a bench?
Take your pick! The beauty of Barry’s is that you get the exact same workout whether you start on the treadmill or bench.
What is your cancellation policy?
We know how much you love to plan so we open reservations 7 days prior to the class. All we ask is that if you are not going to be able to make the class, you cancel at least 12 hours prior. This allows us to make sure someone else gets that primo treadmill if you can’t make it! Anything canceled less than 12 hours before class starts is a late cancel, and you will forfeit the class from your package and incur a no-show fee if you have a membership. (See “What if I miss class?” for more details.)
What if I miss class?
If you book a class under your membership and don’t show up, you’ll forfeit the class and receive a no-show fee — which ranges in price depending on which city your membership is in. If you have a class package, you just forfeit your class.
How far in advance can I reserve my class?
Seven days. At noon, exactly one week prior, we release all classes for a given day.
So for instance, if it’s Tuesday, you can book the following Tuesday’s classes beginning at 12:00pm, and so on and so forth. For the most popular classes, we know for a fact that there are people staring at their computers at 11:59 a.m., fingers ready to pounce on the classes once they open for reservations.
What if I’m there close to class start or late to class?
We want to be totally transparent with you: a lot goes into the final minutes before class, which is why we require you to be present five minutes before the class start time. It’s a lot like flying — we need that time to finalize the roster and everyone’s starting spots, as well as to accommodate the wait list and any needed moves. If we started this process at the beginning of class, the class would start late and you wouldn’t get your full workout.
If you are late to class and we have not given away your spot to the waitlist, it won’t cost you anything but a few hundred calories. Just check in, come in, and try not to disturb the Barry’s clients who have already begun their workout.
What is the wait list?
Lots of our classes sell out. If the class you want is sold out, you can get on our wait list. As clients cancel, you will be automatically added to the class in the order you signed up.
If you secure a spot more than 12 hours before the scheduled start time of the class, we will notify you by email. If a spot doesn’t open by then, you still have a chance of getting in. Just arrive at least 5 minutes before class starts and once we have our no-show count we’ll start adding clients from the wait list in order of sign ups.
Can I move my reservation?
If you are outside the 12-hour cancellation window, you can always switch to another class that’s not already sold out. If you need to move your booking — but there are less than 12 hours until your scheduled class — that’s considered a cancellation and the above policy would apply.
OTHER THINGS TO KNOW
What is your return policy?
You can find all information regarding our return policy on the Terms & Conditions page here.
Do you offer gift cards?
Yes! You can find options for your region on our Gift Card page.
Can I leave my kids, pets, or other items in the lobby?
We’d love to share the Barry’s love with everyone, but we unfortunately can’t be liable for anything left in our lobby area. We do not offer child or pet sitting at this time. We love the little ones, but all children must be accompanied by a supervising adult at all times.
What if I’m pregnant or just had a baby?
We strongly recommend you talk with your doctor about what is appropriate for you. Everyone is different. Plus, the details of each pregnancy can differ. While continuing a reasonable program of physical activity and exercise during/after pregnancy often can be beneficial, some modification to exercise routines and exertion levels may be appropriate. Again, we recommend you discuss what is best for you with your doctor, and make sure your doctor knows what a Barry’s workout entails (running and weight training).
If you wish, you can freeze a membership for the duration of your pregnancy. We support you and when you are ready to come back to class postpartum, you can take it at your own pace. You know your body best and we are so impressed with our Mamas-to-be and new mamas in class.
Can I bring my phone into class with me?
No! It’s dangerous and distracting to others. We know how vital it can be to keep that phone with you, but please, for that hour you’re with us, pop it in a locked locker.
How old do I have to be to come to Barry’s?
15 is the magic number to attend Barry’s, but you have to be accompanied by an adult until you are 18.
To attend class in Germany, you must be 18.
Are you thinking about opening a new Barry’s near me?
Unless you’re on Mars, then probably! We have a team who are busy answering that very question at every waking moment — where should we open up next? If you think people would love Barry’s where you are, and you want to get involved in helping us determine if it makes sense, feel free to reach out to us on the Contact Us page.
